The Passive House Design and Construction Course is aimed at all current and aspiring building industry professionals who are motivated to learn how to build to the world’s most advanced and energy efficient construction standard.

This foundation course is offered in three modules. Each module can be taken separately, or they can be taken together in a combination that meets your needs.

Part A (4 days in class): November  10, 11, 12, 13  

Part A can be taken on its own and provides a comprehensive foundation in Passive House design and construction. These are the principles that need to be thoroughly understood in order to write the Certified Passive House Designer / Consultant exam. We also strongly recommend that if you intend to write the exam you take Part B as well, since the exam does cover aspects of PHPP and examinees are required to supply a valid PHPP registration number.

Part A covers the technical, social, economic, and policy elements of the standard. Numerous case studies, both domestic and international, will demonstrate current best practice.

Day 1: Passive House Principles, Insulation and Airtightness
Day 2: Thermal Bridging and Windows
Day 3: Mechanical Systems
Day 4: Economics, Design, Quality Assurance and Certification

Intended Audience: All building industry professionals, including city planners, policy makers, building officials, manufacturers, engineers, architects, designers, contractors, and builders. Part A can be taken as a standalone course even if you don’t intend to write the exam.

Venue:  Part A will take place at the Centre for Social Innovation Spadina Location in the following rooms:

November 10 & 11: Alterna Savings Meeting Room
November 12: Innovation Lab
November 13: Alterna Savings Meeting Room

Part B (3 days in class):  November 24, 25, 26 

Part B is meant to enable you to take on your first Passive House project. This segment of the course offers a step by step guide to using Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) to design to the Passive House standard. Participants will model a sample project in PHPP. It is recommended you take Part B if you intend to write the Certified Passive House Designer / Consultant exam as some PHPP competency may be tested and examinees are required to supply a valid PHPP registration number. 

Intended Audience: All those that will be directly involved in the design and construction of Passive House projects.

If you wish to take Part B we recommend you purchase the  PHPP software prior to attending the course. The PHPP manual is provided with the purchase of the software. PHPP can be purchased on our website here.

Part C (online module): self-paced

Part C is an online exam prep module that is self-paced. This module provides slides and exercises to help prepare you to write the Certified Passive House Designer / Consultant exam. Feedback will be given on your design exercise. Please note that your access to this module is granted for the upcoming exam. You are permitted to extend access to the next exam if you are unable to write the upcoming exam for any reason. However, further extended access would incur a fee.
